SSS 1001

SSS 1001 is a two-credit-hour course that is available exclusively to LSU Student Support Services students. Taught by Jude Abshire, the course is designed to support students during their transition to college, the course serves as a structured first-year experience and is required for freshman SSS participants.

Using the book Teach Yourself How to Learn, students develop practical strategies for academic success, effective learning, and personal growth. The course helps students strengthen study habits, improve time management, increase motivation, and build the skills necessary to thrive throughout their college journey.

 

What Students Learn

Throughout SSS 1001, students develop the skills and strategies needed to succeed both academically and personally. The course focuses on effective learning techniques, time management, organization, goal setting, personal responsibility, motivation, and self-discipline. Students also strengthen their critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills while increasing self-awareness and developing habits that support lifelong learning. By the end of the course, participants are better equipped to navigate the challenges of college and maximize their success at LSU.
