Recycling Sortation Center
At the Campus Sustainability Recycling Sortation Center, we process and divert recyclable materials from our campus waste stream to keep LSU sustainable. By sorting our recyclables on-site, we ensure higher quality processing and minimize waste sent to local landfills.
How Does Campus Collection Work?
Our sortation process begins right at the bin. Campus recyclables are collected using two main methods.
- Dual-Stream Recycling Bins (Picked up daily): Located across campus buildings and common areas to keep paper and commingled containers separated at the point of disposal.
- Blue Bottle and Can Bins (Picked up weekly): Dedicated for quick disposal of beverage containers while on the go around campus.
What We Sort and Accept
Once collected, our team processes the following materials at our sortation facility:
- Plastics
- #1 Plastics (PET): Standard water bottles, soda bottles, and clear food containers.
- #2 Pigmented Plastics: Pigmented containers such as detergent jugs and Clorox bottles.
- #2 Natural Plastics: Clear jugs and containers.
- #5 Plastics (PP): Bulky plastics such as 5-gallon buckets.
- #4 Plastics (LDPE): Low-density polyethylene containers such as plastic bags, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, and produce bags.
- Metals
- Aluminum: Beverage cans, clean aluminum foil, and food tins.
- Scrap metal: Large metal items, hardware, and miscellaneous scrap.
Why Sorting Right Matters
Proper sortation keeps contamination low and ensures that recycled materials can actually be repurposed into new products.
